The vineyard

The Wunsch & Mann family passionately cultivates around twenty hectares of vines on the hillsides of Wettolsheim, as well as in Eguisheim, Colmar and Wintzenheim. The estate notably works two emblematic Grands Crus, Steingrubler and Hengst. These unique terroirs, with their varied soils and rich microclimates, offer an exceptional expression of Alsatian grape varieties.

Committed to a nature-friendly approach, the winegrowers converted the vineyard to organic farming in 2008. This decisive choice helps preserve soil balance and ensures wines that remain faithful to their origin.

We complement our own production with grapes purchased from partner winegrowers who, like us, are dedicated to organic practices and come from the Colmar region, mainly Wettolsheim, Eguisheim, Colmar and Wintzenheim. These purchases represent roughly half of our total volume.

The Steingrubler Grand Cru

Located to the west of Wettolsheim, the hillsides of Steingrubler face southeast and lie between 280 and 350 meters in altitude. The stony marl and limestone soils, ranging from clay sand to marno-calcareous compositions, rest on Oligocene marls and limestone conglomerates, partially covered with scree and granitic sand.

The upper part of Steingrubler is a prime terroir for Riesling due to its sandier soil. The lower part, richer and more limestone-based, is perfectly suited to Gewurztraminer and Pinot Gris.

Steingrubler Grands Crus are wines rich in aroma, with a solid body and firm structure, offering a bouquet of great finesse with sometimes mineral or floral nuances. These are wines with outstanding aging potential.

The Hengst Grand Cru

Located south of Wintzenheim, the vineyard faces south and southeast and stretches across a fairly steep slope between 270 and 360 meters in altitude. The soil is mainly composed of Oligocene conglomerates and limestone marls, which give the wine a solid and well-structured character.

The roughly 78 hectares of Hengst are planted primarily with Gewurztraminer, with Pinot Gris and Riesling also holding an important place.

When young, Hengst wines show a wild character that echoes the origin of the name of the terroir, since “Hengst” means stallion. Bottle aging softens and refines them. Their remarkable ability to age well for ten to twenty years, or even longer, consistently surprises enthusiasts and connoisseurs.
